Using wget to retrieve port source code

Posted Sunday, March 6th 2011 in FreeBSD - Permalink

The default tool to download source code when building ports is fetch. I have run into a few occurrences where fetch failed to download a tarball for unknown reasons, but wget was able to. So if you want to set wget to be the tool used for port downloads, we first must install it:

# cd /usr/ports/ftp/wget
# make install clean

Now, edit /etc/make.conf and add the following lines:

FETCH_CMD=wget
FETCH_BEFORE_ARGS=-nc --progress=bar --read-timeout=60
DISABLE_SIZE=yes
