I finally have myself a new computer!
I always would use hand-me-downs from people the would upgrade to new ones. Sadly, I have always been at least five year behind in my hardware.
My last desktop, a 2.3GHz single core with 1GB of RAM, suddenly died at the end of the semester. I had to have a new one to finish grading and other tasks for my teaching job. So I ordered a new one from Walmart.com. It’s a Lenovo with a 64-bit quad core 2.6GHz AMD processor, and 6GB of DDR3 RAM. It’s the first time I’ve been able to keep up with software!
It came with Windows 7, which I never let boot up once. It’s running Ubuntu 10.10, which I have found a few issues with, but overall it is nice having a machine that can run a nice-looking theme and dual monitors without any lag!
On a side note, I bought RAM for a server that my father gave to me from his office. I was planning on hosting the Akron Linux Users’ Group homepage, but they declined. So now I am trying FreeBSD, using it to host Doom games, which I haven’t really been keeping up on lately. It’s been an adventure so far, taking me an hour just to figure out how to get the prompt the way I want it, and ‘ls’ to show colours. I figure it’s good to gain some experience, however.
